How do we fight negative media images? + wealth ideas (scroll down)

In one image NY is presented as an overly-sexualized tramp who cavorts around scantilly clad and foul mouthed. Indulging her carnal pleasures ad nauseum. In the rest of the pics is the ad for sony playstation white' Is anyone as pissed as I am about these pictures? Everything about the black girl, from her clothes to her attitude sceams 'inferior'! The ww is dominating the shot looking larger, far more attractive and obviously superior to this 'po lil black chile' The black girl has obviously been chosen based on her dark skin, short nappy hair and ability to look weak and pathetic! In the top shot, she almost appears to be being inspected by the ww! These pictures are racist on so many levels....Why she would pose as a fool to be inspected by this ww is beyond me, but these pictures are beyond infuriating to me, This is just the tip o f the ice berg when it comes to how bw are portrayed by the media.....

(A white man's comment on media images)

First, for full disclosure purposes, I am a white Male, So my view might be a bit biased cause I have liked darker featured women just as much as lighter featured women.I agree with most of the posters sentiments that the media’s version of what the top rung of the ladder for beauty is. It is the blond hair, thin Caucasian woman. It’s obvious and almost irritatingly obvious. ” that “black woman are admired for their white traits”. The MEDIA might do this, the average white male does not in my experience. The media is skewing the reality. They have a stake in the whole racial thing (among other things) because if people instantly judge when they see someone (by race and other things), it makes focusing a product on a target audience simple. But who determines what is beauty in modeling? The masses of average white males? LOL, not by a million miles. Who is it that determines beauty in advertising? Again, not the majority of white males and not by a long shot. I would bet my house that if the average white male was in charge of hiring the models for fashion and advertising, things would be distinctly different (which is not to say they are qualified for what would sell clothes or products, they aren’t. But there tastes would be different from what is the norm right now, guaranteed). As far as white men and their like for thinness? Their is some truth to it, no doubt. Keyword is SOME. It has been my experience that how a girl wears her weight matters A LOT. Black women have the traits they have and they can be quite appreciated by males in general if the skewing was not there. It is attitude! The purveying view of the average white man (and other men too), I’d bet in large part inculcated by the media’s images, is that black women are not demure but combative. They are not warm but filled with attitude. Men do not like that. I was watching this comedy based show the other night, a late night repeat (not much of tv show watcher). This black dude and white dude are best friends is the premise of the show. they go to this bar that is entirely black. The white dude starts talking to this black girl. This girl is very dark skinned and has all the features an african woman might have (she was not pin thin, she was moderately slender). She was warm and funny and easy going. That girl with all her african features would have white guys drooling over her (which is not to say she would want that per se, but she would nevertheless). It was a clear example of, imho, what I speak of above.Personally, I think BW should be careful how they spend their money. Do not support “things” that perpetuate the BW “attitude”. BW shown as sweet and silly and funny and warm etc etc etc, IMHO, would be the best thing that could happen for BW in terms of media image. The media has everyone thinking every category of girl and person are something specific (again, this helps them to sell). When I became aware of this, kind of a big wake up, all of a sudden BW were catching my eye more. I came to find out that I, and suspect most everyone, tend to see someone’s traits, like their race, and you already have an image in your head as to what they will be like in a split second. It’s such a crock. Also, just to be fair, the other reason about not approaching a BW is that I assumed I am not going to act “macho” enough.....

Sorry I did not post last week y'all. I was just soooo busy, I could not spare the time. But anyway... Lets talk about these pics.

I guess I would agree with the above poster on many accounts. I think the media is extremely deceptive and biased. What I find most dangerous and damaging about the media, is that perception is viewed as truth! This is why it is so important not to let them present us in whatever lackadaisical fashion they choose because at the end of the day we will suffer for it. It is extremely important that we maintain a demeanor of class, elegance and tasteful beauty. This is easier said than done, I know, but we must change the way we are being depicted in the media. Unfortunately some of the worst culprits as far as disparaging our image has been black media outlets such as BET. which is nothing but pure garbage! It is unbelievable that we would have to fight our own in their determination to paint horrific portraits of beautiful black women. But that is exactly what we must do. The media is doing everything in it's power to diminish us, disparage us and demean us. We must take back control and fight these lies with everything in us. Most of us are not loud, foul mouthed, manly, and filled with attitude. This is a stereotype that is perpetuated for the sake of building us up as undesirable and unappealing. I think it is time to put our heads together and take steps to protect our collective self image, as well as that of the little girls that follow.... Look at the above pictures what to they say to you? How can we change the unfair perceptions of bw in the media today when many women (like NY) are willing to throw us all to the wind for some transient fame and monetary inducements? What do you ladies think? What can we do about this ongoing problem.....

Wealth Ideas follow......

Here is another good reason to start a business. Maybe you don't want big money from you small biz, maybe you just need to save some tax money. Either way, whether you want to be big or small: take the following steps for your business to save thousands of dollars per year in taxes.

1. Get a business plan listing your plans and goals
2. Register your business with your local county clerk

3. Set up a business bank acct. ( I've gone over how to do this in prev. posts)

4. Use Professional stationary and business cards (dirt cheap on the Internet, Ive gone over where to find them in prev. posts)

5. Get company listing in your phone book

6. Advertise in papers, direct mail, fliers, etc to build customer lists

7. Keep accurate records and books

Wealth Ideas #1 (Metal Money) -hundreds per day!

This one I learned of from a man on our block. One day, we threw my daughter's old bed away to make room for her brand new one. She was excited because she was getting a queen size this time and she was looking forward to all the added space. She is a wild sleeper who often fell out of her former twin bed. After we threw her old bed out, I did not tell anyone else in the house but I was a tad concerned that the garbage men would not take it. It was sitting against the large fence in front of the house with the mattresses and all steel part that goes under to support the bed. The all metal poles went out last. As I tidied up the poles in the garbage can, I could feel eyes watching me. I looked up in time to see several men eyeing the things we had thrown out. I just figured they wanted the mattresses, although I don't know why anyone would want someone's discarded mattress. I knew people often took them. Well my suspicions were right. No sooner had I closed the door when I heard yelling in Spanish. I peeked through the front window and watched 2 of the men I had seen earlier fighting over the mattresses. While they augued over who had seen them first, a truck pulled up and a guy dressed in overalls, snatched up the railings and under bed support with the poles. The 2 men turned around and gave a scream as they realized he had taken the metal parts and tried to chase the truck down. My neighbor stood on his porch laughing at the scene while he sipped coffee. My curiosity got the better of me, and I came out to ask him why they wanted the stuff. "well,"

He told me "I guess they needed mattresses is my guess about the mattresses -but the metal fetches a damn good price! Just the bed parts, that man took just, will net him about 50.00!" I was stunned. "Are you serious? " I asked. "Sure" he told me. "I used to work at the metal shop on Clint Street for years" "You can even take old, small non running cars, Even a small car will get you about 500.00!" I was now shocked. I knew I had to tell you ladies that. For all of you who have old metal, especially large pieces of metal. Look in you phone book and look up metal centers. In some parts they are called recycling centers. and take all of your old outdated metal things and clean up at the bank. If you have an old car that is in danger of rusting into the ground, get paid to get rid of it. Also later I met a guy who told me that he makes 200.00 per day just by riding around the city close to garbage day and collecting all the metal and taking it away. He said his brother has an ad in the paper to haul old metal things away for free, and he has more calls than he can handle. If you have a pick up or know someone who does, and don't mind getting your hands dirty, this may be the perfect biz for you. You will need to dress in strong jeans and be prepared to work. But this business is def. doable, especially if you like outdoor work and lifting does not scare you. You can build this up with one or two helpers and make a killing in your city. Most people walk right past million dollar opportunities every day, decide now to open your lovely eyes and really see them...

Wealth Idea # 2 (Menus to success)

This is a very good business for those who are sociable and really like people. I did this business years ago when I was flat broke and needed to earn money to leave the state, and get away from my crazy Ex. I know how wonderful this business can be. Not only did it support me and my child when I only had 50.00 in seed capital to start it with, but when I fled the state, I sold it to a good friend for 15.000! That's how lucrative it had become in just 6 months! Now 15k may not sound like alot but I can tell you, it's a whole lot for a baby business, and it allowed me the freedom to heal and spend much needed time with my precious daughter. If you really like people and the idea of hard work turns your stomach-this may be the biz for you. The work is very easy and you'll be socializing more than anything else. This is how it works. I went to my favorite restaurant in town and offered them free menus. They happily accepted. I found out who some of their favorite regular customers were, and offered to place their advertisements on the menu for free. I did about 5 top customers for free because I needed a sample menu. I took it to a printer, had it laminated and took a few samples iwth me. I gave the printer 50.00 down and promised payment in two weeks. I remember being on pins and needles because I did not have the money. I was definitely stepping out on faith. I took the samples and showed several restaurants in the area. I offered them free menus as well, and talked about how would they like to see their best customers on the menu. This time, I went to see their customers and charged them 100.00 for a small ad and up to 250.00 for a double space front or center ad. I took type set copies of their ads and had the menus printed. I sold all the ad space in about a week. I had about 1500.00 after printing fees. I took this money and paid for my original menus and still had over 1000 left along with a lucrative business. This is a great biz for people who love to take lots of coffee brakes and make money simply by talking to people. The more the people like the restaurant to faster they will buy the ad space. I was truly shocked at how easy it was to sell the spaces. Many times I would simply mention the restaurant and they wanted a spot! The money is great! but probably the best thing about this business is that you will meet all kinds of people in your town. If you are the type who wants to meet the business people in your town, this is a great business to start. I met many handsome unmarried white men while I did this business. It was a bigger bonus than the money. But believe me the money is great! Here is how you get the customers. After you line up the restaurant, use the phone book to jar the owners memory about his customers. Then simply call and get an appointment. I can tell you from experience that when you get the appointment, you have an 85-90% chance of getting the sale. I did this business and I know what I am talking about. Just get the appointment, I was nervous, stuttering and totally inexperienced. and I still got 85-90% of all my appointments! You can do this. And after the first one it's much much easier. Pick a name for your biz. Mine was magic menus and I got business cards after my 2nd restaurant. Just make sure that you deliver because the restaurant's reputation is on the line (and yours too) and they do not want to look bad in front of their favorite customers. All you need to start this business is some menus done to show for example. Line up a popular restaurant in your town and use them as your example. This must be bonifide sample because people will call to check it out. This opportunity can easily make up to 2.000 every 2 weeks (that's what mine made anyway, you can definitely make more with more work) This is a fun business with no heavy hauling, lifting, or back breaking work involved. But remember you must be the sociable type. If you hate to meet new people this business will not be a good fit for you. But with commitment, you can make really good money in this biz. BTW, my friend who took over my old business, perfected it and makes 2500.00 per week!!! Twice what I was making and she constantly turns people away! She absolutely loves it! and has become super popular in her town as a bonus! --including meeting her rich white husband!!!!.....and here I thought I was good at it......

Wealth Idea #3 (little servers and a stripper)
This idea I came up with at a friend's house last summer. We were throwing a bridal shower for an old very religious friend. She was offended by everything traditional, and was extremely conservative. So we knew that a stripper would be out of the question, but we both felt the party needed some spice to it. We also needed servers for the party and did not want to waste alot of money hiring some. I came up with this clever little idea that anyone with a little initiative could turn into a thriving business. On the day of the party we arrived with our troop of little waitresses. I had taken about 5 of my little nieces given them 10.00 each for the day and dressed them in little maid costumes. They looked so cute. They all had on little black dresses, stocking, and tiny high, but flat heels. The bride absolutely loved them. Then after they served the meal, and everyone was relaxed, out came our little stripper. Except he was a little cousin of mine who only danced around and took off his shirt. The women loved him and filled his pockets with money. Everyone thought it was hilarious including the bride, who was happy we had respected her wishes. It ended up being one of the best bridal showers I have ever attended, and after that one I later found out that the kids had taken the idea, and rented themselves out as a package to several different parties, with my sister acting as their agent! Everybody seemed to love them! They served and stripped all over town! People thought they were so cute! The smaller kids are, the more money they will make at something like this obviously. as this is a novelty act. But they made a killing last summer and plan to do it again this summer. This is taking the initiative, why let a good idea die on the vine, you must be willing to breathe life into it, and get it going. It is always a good idea to get kids interested in entrepreneurial endeavors while they are young. Even if they want a traditional job, you want them to have the choice and the ability to invent a biz should anything happen. The job market is extremely volatile and unstable. The last thing anyone should do is depend on it! Encourage your children to come up with some of their own ideas and help them bring them to fruition. Encourage them to look for needs in their community and find ways to fill them....

Beauty tip for the ladies:

(Zip the zits with a home remedy)

Did you know that many adult also suffer from pimples and the like? Here is a great tip, If you want to keep your skin free of bacteria that causes pimples, dead cells, and residue-try this:

Mix I tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar into a cup of warm water.

Pat this on your face with a clean cloth or a cotton ball. Apply this once per week and watch your skin clear up beautifully. The reason this works is because pimples cannot stand up to the acid in the vinegar and they die quickly. Pat your face gently and if you are pimple prone, wash your face more often and keep hair away from your face.
Natural Mask:
For skin that needs some tightening, use egg white. Simply take the egg white and gently apply it to the face. It will dry like a mask and get very tight, wash it off with a gentle cleanser after about 15-20 minutes. Your face will be smooth and tight...
Thank you all for tuning in -see you next post.....

I agree with the poster. I have noticed with living here in Texas, the immediate response people expect to get from me is PURE attitude; especially the BM/WW couples.
So...no matter how tough the day has been, when I walk into an establishment, I present a warm smile to the greeter at the door. (In WalMart it is hilarious because most of them are lonely seniors and then I am at the door for a few minutes chatting - but that is another story - while everyone stares)

Now for the two pics. I SO dislike New York - I basically 'threatened' my daughter to not even idolize her at all. Nor the fools she saw on Flava of love.

I told her it is baaad enough that black women are portrayed in a bad spotlight, but that she does not (and will not)need to add that to her life and image of what a real woman is and behaves.

or the PlayStation is it really necessary. For all of that they could have chosen a huge lion and a smaller animal and photoshop'ed them. - shaking my head on that one.

I am thinking - writing letters - to the advertising agencies. Of course you must do them en masse these days. (Online petitions maybe?) and of course NOT supporting the products, the shows, and more.
Maybe writing the actresses asking them to consider NOT adding to the steroetypes. dunno maybe I am speaking idyllic and utopic (is that really a word?).

Thanks,

more to watch out for and to teach my daughter.

while i dont like the advert, i feel like, sara, u are overreacting a bit. being someone with nappy hair myself, i was slightly disturbed by the comment
'The black girl has obviously been chosen based on her dark skin, short nappy hair and ability to look weak and pathetic!'

the first thing i thot was 'does dark skin and nappy hair automatically make u inferior?'
if she had been light skinned with straighter hair would the advert have been better despite the pathetic look? (but then again the simple truth is that she is NOT lightskinned and if she was, she wouldnt have been used)

for me i guess i dont buy the notion of not letting ANY black girl who wants to look weak and pathetic do so. its about balance. a lot more images of black women as 'normal females' which includes everything including the bad stuff but especially the good stuff. its about BET and the lot creating soap operas with 'regular' characters. because guess what? my neighbour is an overweight b***t with a huge mouth and an empty brain. when i c that image, i nod and remember her. but i am not that, so dont represent me as such.

plus i have seen many images of white women looking just as pitiful. the only diff being there are thousands of images to cancel it out. i just feel that the anger should be directed not just at negative imaging but certainly also at the lack of positive ones. (mind u i believe black women have been to a large extent responsible for it. notice how black men dont entirely suffer from this?)

Anon, I understand exactly what you are saying. and I apologize if it sounded that way to you. But look at the picture. This girl is as black as the background! I beleive that was deliberate. I have said I am dark myself, and I love my chocolate skin. I love darkskin period. but what I am saying about the pic is the dark represented old, outdated inferior and the white girl represented the opposite. I have nothing against dark skin or short hair. I am simply saying they used these characteristics against her like they were bad, and they are not. Look at the way the two women are dressed! Their intention is glaringly obvious, and that is what I take issue with. And the model does look pathetic letting this white girl grab her face like that....

..........................

Yes Sara...
there are some jobs models should just not take....I swear, but the real peole to blame are the art directors, the directors etc, who put together this nighmarish vision for the client (PLAYSTATION???) I don't have a playstation, but I don't see the application of these photos for this product. I don't get it. If you are going to have photos like that, then they must be equal..I need to see Becky's face get all "grabbed up like that too." ...and if you are going to have Becky be this teutonic amazon, then I want to see a butt kicking beautiful sister with a huge afro "making it rain" down on Becky....and Becky needs to be inspected too (I do pick up an aura of inspection, which makes me uncomfortable)

The problem still is a lot of these companies are not American..and the Japanese (for example) love anything white and blond, because they are brainwashed to some extent) so they actually approve and request this type of thing, and the American art directors are only too happy to comply...to not feel reigned in by political "rightness" as they would be with an American company.
I wouldn't buy a playstation personally..it comes from a fundamental disrespect for black people in general..which is partially fueled by some black people..the only way to combat this is to use your economic power..literally it is the only way...this is all these companies will ever hear..and respond to.

Now as for the models..I know I kind of started out blaming them a little..but the truth is, unless you are Naomi or Giselle (that type) you have no control over the clients vision...and all they are trying to do (the models) is what everyone else is..make a decent living....all you have to do is watch "America's next top beatdown" (model)..they are so mean to those chicks..they are treated like empty canvasses for the client to do as they wish..I am sure the payoff can be wonderful if you can make it through to the top..but to get there will hurt the soul...imo.

btw..I have a feeling these photos were displayed in Times Square for millions of people to see..imagine the effects when a little black girl sees that, and a little white girl.It does not take a rocket scientist to discern the ensuing feelings.

Just in case it does a rocket scientist..here is the analysis.

LBG= Little black girl- feels like CR*P and sad, but does not quite know why.

LWG- feels GOOD and happy and knows exactly why.

I believe this ad campaign was only advertised in Europe. Not here the U.S. I know if they were displayed here, they wouldn't have gone over very well due to how overtly racist the ad was.

sorry sara, this actually came out wrong. i didnt mean u (sara), i meant the media in general (i was somewhat agreeing with ur analysis).

i meant 'i'm not a loud bla bla... i'm me so (media) dont box me in that category. while i'm forced to appreciate crappy imagery, i want some of the non-crappy ones too.

this is y i never comment, i'm so bad at this. i hope i havent succeeded in confusing everyone.
just wanted to make clear i was not unset by ur comment. i just saw it from a different perspective i guess. i generally agree with u.
ur replies are on point. sometimes it takes someone to help u see from a different angle, so thanx 4 that.

way to generalize a country with 130,000,000 people living in it.

if you don't want black women to be negativity stereotyped, please don't do it to other people. thank you.
...........................

My Dear Dear Dear Dear Eric,

I can say anything I want to dear because I am A FREE WOMAN and I say it based on what I have seen BECAUSE I have spent a lot of time in Japan. Now that does not mean I do not appreciate the country or the people or the culture (outside of some of these negative images they clearly enjoy)

If you ever take the time to read Japanese comic books for example (not that I actually "read" them..I just look at them at times..for the anime) you will see that the Japanese will often depict themselves with big blue eyes and blond hair, whereas the other asian races are depicted as being small and "slanty" eyed (for lack of a better term..I personally LOVE asian eyes btw)and sneaky. A blond tall model will tend to do very well in Japan. It is human nature that people are intrigued by those who are their complete opposites...and I don't think it is a secret that the Japanese PRIZE white white kabuki skin...and they are not the only ones. Japan, is the only country to date, where I have walked into a department store and seen a black "sambo" type mannequin with the big puffy red lips (which btw, ww are rushing out to buy) and an unkempt afro...

SO I really do not need a lesson from you. Further, I focused on the Japanese BECAUSE those pictures were taken for the benefit of Playstation, which is a Japanese company...and I guarantee, some Japanese MAN sitting in an office in Tokyo, looked at and approved those photos.
One more thing..because now I am bored, and I will not debate YOU Eric on this issue...in the 100yen stores in Japan, which I love to go to, virtually ALL of the products have a WHITE model on the package...I have no idea what they are selling most of the time, because I don't read Japanese..but I am pretty sure they are not selling "packages of white women."

AND..it is almost unheard of to see virgin black japanese hair in Tokyo..many of the people dye their hair to a lighter color...so I do not need schooling from you..when they stop having mannequins displayed in the stores..and stop making one sided pictures like those above (and I already said, it would be okay if all the photos were a mirror image of each other, with the roles reversed) then and only then will I stop saying things like I say..

Sara, I apologize for the stern tone in advance. You KNOW how much I respect your blog.

Here's a little advice: Do not even turn BET on, don't even watch that channel.

Don't buy rap crap that insults and humiliates black women.

Dress smart and behave like a lady.

Fight these stupid stereotypes by not buying into them.

Also i think they want us to be loud and obnoxious, it makes Them feel at ease...by them i mean white people...and other people who are not black as well! and hell, sometimes even black people themselves!

When they see a beautiful black women, articulate, intelligent etc they get uncomfortable and sometimes even angry so you have to prepare yourselves for that.

Delish, I agree 1000% with you girl! I admit I like porn very much and I watch alot of the anime porn and the japanese women are always WHITE WITH BLUE OR GREEN EYES! The men look a little more ethnic but never the women! Also, whenever they will make clear references to White Alibaster (sp?) skin, that they know good and damn well does not look a damn thing like them! I have often wondered why they cannot accept their own beauty and see it's magnificence in and of itself. Instead they praise and worship at the alter of white beauty thereby disparaging and ignoring their own! Go figure! All I know is that you are right on the money girl....

Thank you SaraT...

I appreciate that..and I KNOW what I am talking about BECAUSE I have eyes in my head...

AND I have been to Japan several times, and spent time shopping etc..and I am hard pressed to find advertising that does not feature pale blue/green eyed blond caucasian women..and as you rightly say, the men tend to be more ethnic, because it is mostly men who control this kind of advertising, and so they can't help but insert themselves into the picture..give themselves a ray of hope that THEY can find and be with this elusive big eyed, light hair- colored western vixen. I bet if you have a Japanese woman type CEO controlling the images, the women would tend to look Japanese, and the men would look more Western, under a similar premise...because many Japanese women are equally enthralled with the Western man.

I want to make a case for the other side of my argument...which is if the Japanese are enthralled with their physical opposite (the tall blue eyed blond for example) then they should be equally enthralled with US, the beautiful black woman..well the answer is YES..especially if they have not drank the "kool aid"..but it will take a strong constitution to avoid drinking that poison..this is ok with me..who doesn't want a man with a mind of his own?..a mind that tells him we are beautiful and worthy, no matter SOME of the images we see around us.

That's all...for now at least.

Just wanna say this, the way to fight is to write !! and carry it out by boycotting not supporting these companies , On New York she is used to perpretrate the image of the uncouth slutty loud inappropriate bw you can't take home to mom never mind being seen with in public. It seems to me that VH1 has made a cottage industry out of laughing at bp with the shows New York ,Flavor of Love ,and Charm School[black women don't have charm or class, void in their culture, mom didn't teach them s**t] and we watch and laugh with them and their message that they send all around the world about us .

New York is laughed at because she thinks she's sexy and attractive ,just as Flavor Flav actually thinks women are all clamouring to be with him because he's so hot ...,and the world sees us as delusional clowns which is why you want see Gabrielle Union,Kenya Moore,or Kelly Rowland with shows like these it wouldn't be funny since they have beauty and class and there wouldn't be a punch line i.e. black women are unattractive and crass. I believe they are watched by teens to people in their early 30's at least I hope so ,older people are more conscious of what they are doing and most make sure it is not supported by their kids.

The European ad with the black woman being subdued by the ww is so over the top and politically incorrect don't know what to say ,but since this is a blog about bw dating interracially we could say the message is chose ww esspecially since this is from Europe where wm love them some bw unashamely !!

Proud Bougie...Most everyone in the bc knows that the word
"BOUGIE" was slang for the word "SNOB." There is nothing worst than having a bp turn his or her noses up at other bp because they are still trying to obtain that middle class or better status. Also, if you haven't heard the American middle class is strinking.
I am all for materialism or should I say middle class values.
There is nothing wrong with owning a business, house, taking care of ones' family, etc.

btw...Mr. Bougie what race is your wife or are you still married? And, yes you should be concerned for your daughters' future as far as being married, education, etc. Some people think marrying another race person and having children with other race people will automatically make their children's lives better. Not necessarily- just talk to some bi-racial adults.
And, I still question you being on this particular site.

Hmmmmmmmmm?

In regards to the Playstation White ad, I think it illustrates perfectly the double-standard in the media. When it comes to women, white women are almost always portrayed as the ideal. But when it comes to men, it usually seems the opposite.

To illustrate this could you imagine if the Playstation ad featured a white MAN inspecting a black man and belittling him? It would never happen. Maybe 50 years ago, but in this day and age nobody would even consider publishing such an ad. In nearly every movie or TV show in which black men and white men interact, the black man is always the powerful dominant one. Buddy movies are a perfect example, but they are by no means the only genre following that trend.

Imagine if the trend were reversed and white men were always belittling black men. Wouldn't the black community be united in its outrage? So where is it on this issue?

What do you ladies think about my situation... A friend of mines introduced me to a bm friend of hers. Jae is married to a bm and they have two kids.
Off and on the guy friend and I would go out to dinner or watch a movie at his house. In the beginning the guy seemed to be very into me. I was just looking for a friend to hang out with. We have some similiar interest.
However, I was rather surpised to learned that he was discussing me with Jae and of course, I too was discussing him with Jae.
I told her that he is a man he does not need any coaching...in other words stop telling this guy things about me. They are very close friends(he just renovated her mother-in-laws house at a great cut rate deal.) Her husband is friends with him also.
This past Friday night we were driving and some how we were talking about interracial dating. And, the guy says quickly, "Oh, yes I know you like wm."(Keep in mind he has had a relationship with a ww... surprise, surprise). I was very surprised by his quick statement and I thought about our friend, Jae. My quick reply was Jae talk too much and he says tell it to her. And, I reached for his cell phone. The guy calls Jae and hands me the phone. I say, "Hi,
and tell her that he was with me and that she talks too much. Of course, she wants to know what she talks to much about and before I could say anything he yells towards the phone that he did not tell me anything. I told her what we were talking about and she asked did he deny being with ww and I said, "No, he did not. I also said, "I have asked a few bm young and old have they ever had a relationship with another race female and they all said, yes. The older men ages 60, 70 and up now they surprise me the most because most of them lived through segregration. In the first few weeks the guy and I were going out I bought up marriage- I simply wanted to know what his thoughts were. lol...that guy looked at me as if I had cussed at him. He was married once before and so was I. On the other hand, his brother is married to a hw with two of her own kids and my guy friend says that her kids do not respect his brother. I do not think the wife respects him either. My guy friend says she is rather pushy. He says his brother is good provider.
A few times my guy friend did ask me to move in with him. Hmmm, the hw gets a wedding ring, a house and a good provider for HER kids and I would get? I have no plans on doing anything sexual with him- especially since I am now aware of their private convesations about me. Sometimes, I think I am his consolation prize for repairing her mother-n-laws house.

how so true! i remember i was dating this guy(bm) and he specifically told me "your too nice...i think your acting fake, this goody-goody act i ain't fallin for it". so i asked him "would you rather me be a b*tch?". he said no. im thinking in my head what exactly is he looking for? thankfully it didn't last. And this wouldn't be the first time i got a comment like that from a bm, i don't ever get that kind of comment from any other race.

back to subject...i will say im kinda slow, my first thought on the pictures b4 reading everyone's opinion is that they just wanna take risks with the pics. fashion is known for doing that so, it really didn't surprise me. Harry, that's bull. White men have been the eptiome of masculunity since America's conception. Look at ads and billboards. The tall, rippled white man is adveritsing male clothes. He is the lead in beer commericals. Bounty features the lovely Irish, Bunyan type on their towels.

POC men have been placed in this skewed realm of masculnity compared to a WM. They are almost seen as catricutres to the "real thing". LM and BM are over-sexualized and a times, appear emotionally weak. AM are protrayed as weak period. WM are the only racial group in media that allowed to have perfect masclunity and have a wider array of traits. POC men and all women are not.

Well to answer your questions all the women in my life are of african descent like myself /single .As for the other questions I get the feeling that you think I'M A COLOR STRUCK BOUGIE who want white kids and grandkids who look down on others, which could be you letting out your own reason for whom you date , or you think I'm a white woman chasing negro hoping that wm take all the bw or you still like bm and want to see me as a jealous troll, and since I support bw choosing nonblack men if they desire, your plan is not working.

Coming from a predominately bf home with a father of course, I'm happy to see sisters empowering themselves instead of being angry and settling. We all know bm who have fallen by the waist side with the violence in our communities ,but what about the bw with their kids who have settled for the lowest bm so they wouldn't be alone .

I strongly believe it all starts with the parents to be honest, if you are loud, dress like a hoochie, have different baby daddies ect ect..how on gods green earth would a person like this set a good example to their kids?? They will obviously end up like their mother as they didnt have any good role models around them to instill some good morals/values in them....and the vicious cycle continues!

How I wish these kind of "black" women would be called something esle and not black women as they make the rest of us look bad! :(

If you are stupid enough (sorry but that's what it is to go with a convict) If you are stupid enough to date a convict, please don't let him near your kids, for God's sake!!! Why in the world would any woman look for a man in prison or recently released is beyond me! Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. Back when I was dating, I would go to great lenghths to protect my baby. I would never let anyone near my home, or know her name or even see her! I was a bit paranoid because I knew 2 mothers's whose daughters had been raped by the mom's boyfriend...If you are too stupid to protect yourself, For God's sake tell every woman you know please protect the children!!!

Nelo, if the Playstation ad featured men instead of women, do you honestly believe that they would actually show a white man dominating a black man in that fashion? You know they wouldn't.

Yes, white men are featured in a lot of ads because white men make up the majority of the male population. But whenever there is more than one man and one of the men isn't white, who always plays the submissive role? White men, not black men. If white men are portrayed as masculine when they are alone, but are portrayed as weak and submissive when compared with black and other men, what message does that send?

But this isn't the point anyway. The point is how would the black community, (and the white community for that matter) perceive the Playstation ad if the two people in the ad were men instead of women?

The Playstation ad appears as if it is saying that black women are inferior to white women. If the ad instead implied that black men were inferior to white men, you could imagine that there would be a huge controversy. So why isn't there one? That's all I'm asking.

However, I agree with you Harry if the ad were one of a wm and a bm the outcry would be deafening and bw would be leading the protest. So, where is the protest for bw? Can you hear the crickets?Ann

I am little confused by this bougie stuff..and I hope I am attributing the correct statements to everyone..this is a good discussion..

Now clearly, there are too many of our sisters who fill some stereotypes with relish (the self sacrificer, the "video" chicks etc...you get the picture) BUT I have never seen a "stereotype" of an attractive, fit black woman who allows hereslf to be "manhandled" by Becky..so I don't see these pictures as being a stereotype, more that it is just gross disrespect of US, masquerading as risque art, for what is essentially a childs game...SO to me, this is a separate argument from the usual Mammy/Jezebel scenario...which too many BW desire to fit into, to the detriment of us who are normal, and trying to live fulfilling lives and be the best we can be...

One of the ways to get there is to educate(not necessarily talking about higher learning..but that is ALWAYS good)ourselves..seek as much knowledge as you can..and save your sheckles (stop buying that designer cr*p) and see the world...travel as much as you can..(and by travel I am not talking @ following the Sinbad Summer festivals from island to island..seeing the same people doing the same thing)...THIS is what is missing from the lives of these women who seek their mates in PRISON????? sigh. They have set their sights so low, and the Universe helps them to achieve that goal.

I don't think the PSP is that terrible. I see what Sony was trying to do since it was in response to the launch of the ceramic white PSP. It shows the contrast between the glossy black and ceramic white and both are equal matches since you see them dominate each other in various pictures. Yeah, the Sony marketing team was a bit brain dead, but I don't think they meant any malice by its campaign. Plus, it gained them attention which is what marketing is supposed to do.

The Flavor of Love and I Love New York are negative images of the BC, but you have to realize what network they are shown on to understand why they even exist. MTV and VH1 have become just trash TV and creates content geared for their audience. Even though their viewers aren't the smartest people in the world, I don't think they expect MTV or VH1 to show a true representation of the BC and they understand it is entertainment. Don't even get me started on 'My Super Sweet 16' as that is the only show that could possibly drive me to kill. Overall, its just baseless trash TV with no true real world representation. The people who watch it aren't influenced it by it, because they are mostly ignorant to begin with, it just reaffirms what they already hold as true. Think of it as a Fox News for young dumb people. I haven't watched MTV in about 8 years when they still showed music videos with some regularity.

Adam I do get what you are saying really..let me say that right away...BUT, just because they do not intend malice does not mean it is not malicious...the prisons are full of people who did not intend to do things..it is the final result that we look at..and even if there are some positions where the black woman is on top of the ww...the main image I see is the one where the ww has the bw all "grabbed up"..and that one appears to be on a billboard in an Asian country..look closely..the other two seem to be photos..I'm not trying to be a detective here...I would rather focus on other things..I just think Sony knew with substantial certainty exactly what they were doing..it could have been easily changed..make them mirror images of each other..and the black background just helps to make the bw look even more helpless and faded into the background..dammit that is not US.

I keep saying this. Stop buying that crap. I will not support even a grocer who does not treat me properly. Now that does not mean I demand respect and attention wherever I go. I too, have a duty to act as a reasonable normal person, and if I do that and am not treated well...they shall not have the benefit of my $$$..adn I will encourage my friends and family to do the same..that is the only way to make a difference..but it has to be a concious effort from all of us..it is not too late .

You can also see that the bw is fading into the background looking obsolete and pathetic while this big pretty ww grabs her face like she's on an auction block!!! Even when the ww is on the ground, it is obvious from the body langquage and her superior look/posture that it is VERY temporary. She is made to POP in the picture, looking bigger than life, attractive and sexy-strong. The bw looks weak, overpowered and beneath her. Which I believe was the message in the first place!

Sara, why is this so easy for US to see, and so hard for others to see? I don't get it. You called it perfectly.

It is almost like a page out of the 1940 Nazi guide to "White Teutonic Womanhood."...if there were such a book, this picture would be on the cover...everything about this picture is telling the bw that she is inferior...BUT I have never bought into that..that is why it is making me angry..because IT WILL seep into a weaker persons subconcious.

I think I saw this ad in NYC. I don't like the sexual connotation, it's aggressive and nasty. This ad is blatant juxtaposition: white = good, black = bad.

That it's coming from Japan / Asia doesn't surprise. They wholeheartedly grab negative images of bp to the nth degree. I read / watch enough anime (and other stuff) to know.

This ad is Nazi-like. Then again, I regard the media as being run by Nazis: all blond, all the time.

People like Adam will never get it. He's blind. He's not a bw. I've had people relate to me (as a bw) based off of what they watch on TV. They admit it. No one is going to tell me that TV / mags / internet is not filling in the blanks, when people don't know individual black people. More people see bw as New York than Condi Rice.

Fighting negative stereotypes is important: we are harmed by it.

The family with the seven kids is so beautiful!

I was watching Drake and Josh the other day. It's a show on Nickolodean(sp?) for those who don't know. Anyways, the one black character was gonna get married, and she had family coming over, but her grandmother couldn't stay with her 'cause she ran out of room, or something like that. Anyways, the stereotypical doofus father of Drake and Josh, white, tells her that they'd be happy to take. Later on, grandma comes, and guess what she looks/acts like? She's overweight and dressed in a moumou(sp?). The moment she comes to the people's house, she rudely asks where the bathroom is. Afterwards, she comes out and tells them that they need to fix their toilet 'cause she broke it! And then bulldozes her way to the living. It's the only way to describe how she was walking. Later on she CARRIES the toilet upstairs and plops it down in the boys' room and rudely says "You're welcome!" 'cause she'd fixed the damn thing! The entire thing was SO annoying and UNfunny, but of course the laugh track was going crazy.

----------------------------------

HP,

The answer is quite simple. The so-called black community does not care about how badly bw are portrayed in the media(or care about us in any aspect). The main focus of the bc has alway been the betterment of bm and bm only. I believe the bc has done more damage to the image of bw by encouraging images broadcasted on; BET, VH1, and MTV with their degrading depictions of bw in music videos by bm rap artist and "reality" shows. We are often misrepresented in the mainstream media as a whole(tv dramas, sitcoms, movies, commercials, etc). We are often portrayed as over-sexed hoochies, mammies(our only reason for existence is to be support some entitled ww) or saffire(loud, obnoxious, unsupportive and condescending to our mates,etc.)stereotypes.

I think it's time we as bw started taking control of our own images(like ww have) and stop allowing the bc and the media, to define us.

Sony owns Playstation and isn't Sony owned by the Japanese?

Yeah, the pics sucks but either one of two things have to happen:

1. Blacks not purchase any additonal gaming products.

2. Blacks start to dominate the the gaming and advertising industry.

In the US, as else where, money speaks volumes. White women do not control the advertising industry and neither do white men, the public at large owns it. And when we, blacks, decide we want to own it things will change.

Everyone and every civilization has a time and season, at this present time, it is the US and some Asian countries. Prior to this century, it was the British. In the next century, Africa will regain its dominance that it had in the past.

Since history has been told by folks other than the people who started life, ie the Africans, we have to bide our time until our turn comes around...and believe me, our turn will come again. And as they all know, what goes around comes around.

Just my input... but I thought that that the black girl was gorgeous in the ad. I was not bothered by her skin and how dark it was. I keep forgetting that some other black women feel this way. I know a lot of men (black and white) who would consider her gorgeous. I cant see anything ugly or weak looking about her.

Believe it or not, there are some people who actually have advertised with dark skinned, nappy headed models and have actually considered them beautiful.

First of all I agree with all who thinks that this ad is negative in regards to bw[personally the image with her [ww] hand on her mouth is the most offensive since I don't know even the quietest bw who would let another woman do that to her without retribution]and can't believe the others who don't get the subliminal message [overt in this ad]. Just like we write on blog post like this one ,we can email and let them how we feel .I know bw may not be big consumers of computer games ,but I bet their sons boyfriends brothers cousins uncles etc play them and bw women my be the purchasers .I remember when I believe it was Avon or something was selling perfume using Nat King Cole image and song Unforgettable using only white models ,Cindy Crawford was one ,and they got so much grief that they throw in one bw for half a second, and stopped the ad campaign all together,So there is precedence to calling and writing.

What makes this evening more galling is the disapearence of the bw from the media in general i remember your reprint of the article I first saw on Brownsista on how bw was being replaced ,but also bw disapearence from the catwalks around the world and fashion magazines even though bw spend 20billion dollars on apparel each year!! Maybe your dollars should dissapear from these companies .Stop paying for insults unless your into that sort of thing.

Another Asian country that insults bw India ,told bw cheerleaders they couldn't come on the field and the girl shown was hot

In the top family photo, that guy is surrounded by eight women. He will be experiencing PMS times eight and he is still smiling.

We could take lessons from the homosexual community who learned from black history.

They started first with themselves and being proud of they are and what they believe. Pooled their monies together and gravitated to changing the mindset of their families and workplace. They organized how they would confront every public and private entity that does not support their lifestyle. I had a homosexual male (co-worker) friend and he would tell me everything except what was going on in those meetings. He did not agree with everything they were doing, even called them too radical on certain issues. Yet, he supported the betterment of the group. We all see the how effective that has been.

Those of you who are great organizers, tell us how to get it started because every time they need a neg. image/insinuation they throw us in. When it is pos/beautiful we are completely ignored. and I remember that Nat King Cole commercial. I remember being furious because they had the nerve to take a black icon and have him sing one of his classics to a ww! I was so angry! I remember thinking hell would freeze over before they had elvis singing to a sister!!!

Oh yes, I have heard of the Indian cheerleading incident. Talk about discrimination and being color struck - I believe that many of the Asians and Indians have us beat when it comes to being entranced and enslaved by whiteness. Truely disgusting and I wish a lot of bw would stop going into their stores and buying their merchandise. I thought I had seen it all, but recently I was in a black neighborhood and Indians and Arabs owned not only all the liquor and convenience stores they also owned the chicken and rib joint - WTF?!?!? What made it worse is that black folks were standing in line to eat that mess and a lot of them have the nerve to complain about how shabbily they are treated by indians, how discriminatory they are, etc. I know that sometimes there aren't a lot of shopping options in certain black neighborhoods, but I really wish we could stop financing our own victimazation and marginalization. When will blacks come together without fighting and everyone trying to be the HNIC and form a coop to take back the neighborhood, open shops, markets, banks. We aren't self-sufficient in the least. It is really just to ridiculous.

You don't know the quietest Black women that would let another woman hurt her without getting crazy and violent? As crazy as this may sound, not all Black women are fighters. Some, like me, wouldn't even be able to fight, and would most likely leave or cry for help. It's a bit sad yes, but noy all black women are these strong females..

Honestly, as a Black Woman, i honestly don't see what's so bad about that ad you guys are discussing. Firstly, i didn't even know that white woman was supposed to be a woman at first because she looks quite masculine. Secondly, the White woman is the one on the floor, and they're both grabbing each other..i guess you can interpret this ad many ways but many of you guys have chosen to use it fit your argument that the American media is Nazi-like and so horrible. *shrugs* i don't really see that, but whatever..

___________________________

Hey Anon...A couple of things I want to say..first..sometimes it is hard to convey ideas in this forum..and I am not one to beat down others to "hear" my point, BUT I find it hard to believe that you cannot, as a BW (as you say you are) see the problem in this AD...and it is just as bad (worse even) if you thought the ww was a man...so that makes me question whether you are a BW..

I think you should reread the posts if you care to..I was the first to mention a Nazi theme..never did I say the American media was Nazi like... more like, it reminds me of the Nazis in the way they portray themselves as strong powerful large and blond...it is far too general a statement to call the American media Nazi- like..I don't even know what you mean when you say that..I only know what I mean..and so I am clarifying a bit more..

I wish I could say there was more than one way to interpret this AD...but well, there just isn't...it has ONE clear meaning..and that you cannot see it is strange to me...but as you say....whatever.

I see it a bit different. I know the art director made the final choice, but I see something different transpiring here. I think they honestly thought they were showing superimposed versions of each color dominating the other in the two different shots. Second photo, they begin to fight; top photo, black dominates; third photo, white dominates. As for the complexions, I absolutely love that they used a ww which such alabaster skin that it matches her white outfit. I equally love that they used a bw which such rich dark skin, that it matches her black outfit (and the background). I also think the background was chosen b/c it was for the new white PSP, and they wanted the white to stand out. However, if they had used a white background, the ww would have equally been washed out, and the bw would have popped.

I think the negative imagery you perceive, comes from the way in which the ww is gripping the bw by the face. This position, is definitely not just dominance, it is also lack of respect. This is not how you fight a worthy opponent; it is how you dehumanize someone you have no regard for. IMO, I think it has more to do with the models. I bet that the bw never even thought to grab the ww like that during the photo shoot. However, when the ww did it, I am sure it stirred some emotion in the photog, and art director, that made them think it was powerful. It was a poor choice by the art director for the opposing dominance, but I am sure it was chosen for the emotion it evoked in them (good or bad; subconscious or conscious).

"Sara, why is this so easy for US to see, and so hard for others to see? I don't get it. You called it perfectly."

The PSP ad was a "test run" in the Netherlands. I don't think that much, if any blame should be dumped on black (American) women for the propagation of this stereotype and image. This comes from a 21 yr old Nigerian girl, who spent 6yrs in the UK, 13yrs in America and 1 yr in Tokyo and Nigeria.

Apparently, according to Sony, they only received one complaint from within the Netherlands. In standard Anti-american sentiment, the response to those who decry this ad in Europe is that Americans are nosy and should mind their own business. And that racism isn't an issue in Europe like it is in America. F**K that. If that were the case, my parents would have never left. Just google being black in Eastern Germany. Even German gov officials say black tourists better not get anywhere close if they want to get out alive.

My point is, it is not so much that Europeans can't see the issue, it is that those who take an issue with it don't have a voice to speak or are accustomed to protesting and getting heard. These sorts of ads that use being black as a visual metaphor for inferiority are actually commonplace in Europe. Sony repealed the ad after the NAACP got involved. What is the equivalent in the Netherlands? Exactly. I think the lesson here is that it is time for black women to take charge of their image, and empower sistas globally. Passivity gets us no where, ladies!

I realized I didn't answer your question. I can only go by what I've witnessed. Gina's "What About Our Daughters?" blog showed that advertisers / corporate sponsors are the lifeblood of TV shows, magazines, etc.

Complain to the advertiser / corporation supporting the negative images. Our spending power is almost a trillion dollars in this economy: crap will get pulled. They all have PR offices to receive feedback from the public. It starts there.

Some companies are brain dead, and produce stuff like the PSP ad.

Nazi-like: my favorite use of hyperbole.

I think this would definitely be a start for us. The Jewish community has always been known to fight hard to keep negative images of themselves out of the media with; letter writing campaigns, picketing, boycotting, etc to make sure that negative stereotypes about them stayed out of the mainstream media. I think we as black women should take a page from their book.

This post was really interesting, I had seen the ads previously though on another blog that adressed the same thing. I really like your blog Sara, it's...inspiring.

Anyways, Delishmish, if you know ever-so-much about Japan why did you fail to mention that there are quite a lot of fashion magazines (S-Cawaii, Blenda, Koakuma Ageha, Egg, Ranzuki, Glitter, Nuts, etc etc) that feature tanned models, and actually give tanning tips? You should have mentioned Ganguro as well, yes the older generations look down on Ganguro, and that's just some and not all, but still the younger generations embrace all of those things. And Mariah Carey is constantly seen in Japanese magazines, and she's black (although light-skinned), but I've seen Ciara and Rihanna on covers there as well.

Also, the entire cultural preference for white skin (skin whitening treatments WERE everywhere), I don't think it has anything to do with wanting to be white, I think that was something stemming back from hundreds and hundreds of years even before light-skinned Caucasians (like the Americans who ended Japan's isolation period) came to the island.

I'm just saying, you did stereotype a very populated country and that was a bit messed up in my humble opinion. And while I've never been in Japan longer than a month, I still know that it is a very diverse country and most of the people I have met have been very nice to me, who is a black woman. And I know of at least ten salons in the Tokyo areas where one can get corn rows and afro style hair cuts. So I don't know...

One more thing..isn't there always.

I am not interested in getting into a protracted discussion aout race, or color really..also it is a deviation from the real topic of this thread. I just happened to look in to see if Sara had updated. I don't post on many blogs...not enough time..but I like Sara's and Pinky's especially..
Anway..Mariah Carey= Black woman??...I don't think so..why and how are you going to not factor in her white mother..I have nothing against Mariah..I like Mariah, but Mariah is multiracial, which is the more likely racial coposition of the future inhabitants of Planet Earth..why box her in when she clearly should NOT be boxed in..In fact, most black peoples OUTSIDE of Africa have some racial mixture. We know this.

You chose poor examples to exemplify your point @ Japan..Rihanna and Ciara???..Once again, I am NOT making a statement @ either one of these chicks..I don't really know (or care) about Ciara, but I am not disputing Rihanna is a black woman..that is not the point really..Bring me someone like India Arie..and then tell me how the Japanese react to her...it could be positive or negative..I don't really know 100%..but I don't see India Arie throwing out the first pitch at a Japanese baseball game..I see Mariah Carey, with her bleached blonded hair and her short shorts.

I never have been a politically correct kind of gal..I call it as I see it..it's MY VIEW.

Anyway..I am done with this topic now...really

I agree...the younger Japanesse has embraced alot of American ideas such as: fashion, hair dyes, hip hop music or soul music in general. LOL, do we still think of blk. music as soul(I am so out of touch- so much of the music is trash)?
There is a You Tube video with a Japanesse man and his very attractive African wife and children and they all live and work in Japan. I thought the short documentary was very well edited.

Ms. B. does not seem to be getting any darker? Most people can still remember a time when Mariah did not want to admit that her father was blk. and she always had to add he was also another ethnicity...as if that was supposed to change people's perception of her.

My girls Oprah, Gail, even Whoopie and other media type females are getting lighter. Ghee, Whoopie and Oprah used to be darker than me- not anymore.

You do not need to dispute the fact that Ciara and Rihanna are black women because they *are* black women, simple as that. I don't see what makes them poor choices. I hope the fact that they aren't the darkest of women and have relaxed doesn't have anything to do with it. Because I'm of a light-brown color in terms of my skin and I have relaxed hair and I'll be damned if anyone tries to tell me I'm any less of a black woman for it. And Mariah Carey is as well for that matter, sure she's light complected and has colored hair but by just looking at her, she is a black woman. And I'm sure a lot of people see her as that.

Oprah and Whoopi are not getting lighter either, whoever thinks that, it's all in their head in my humble opinion.

People need to stop getting hang ups on skin color.

Hey A.F.

I have a feeling this is due to camera lighting on the shows. Camera Lighting seemed to have advanced over the years making everyone appear lighter including white people. Or it could also be because of foundation used on afro skin which tends to make the skin appear lighter.
Somehow I dont think Whoopie (who doesnt care how she looks) or Oprah (whose shown her face without makeup) have skin complexes.

At Monday, June 09, 2008 , Blogger Delishmish said...

OK...lol

I REALLY hate myself for responding AGAIN..when I said I was done..and I really am..but I have to respond..I just have to.

First off..bell you echoed my sentiments exactly. I was too lazy to say the whole thing about Oprah, and Whoopi with the tv lighting..these women are not cut in the ilk of Monsieur Micheal Jackson. I am not a fan of the "She must be bleaching her skin club." Meaning, I do not think everyone does that, especially not these two..just lighting folks..just lighting..An Italian man from Sicily could look like Heidi from the Alps after standing under those glaring tv/movie lights..end of that.

Now Sava..please read what I say carefully since this is your expertise. I did separate all of these women. I have no issue with any of them truly..once again I assert that Mariah cannot be truly described as a black woman..she is a woman with black heritage..there IS a difference..and it is also true that she did not readily admit that until the last few years. Now that could have been a decision with her marketing team. I don't know (or care)..but Mariah is not what comes to my mind when I think BW..That is not to say she could not be at my BW only party (if I had one!..it means she would probably have not had some of the experiences others have had really. Add Halle Berry to the mixture..well she looks a lot more like a black woman...BUT she is STILL a woman with black heritage ..not a black woman..there is a difference. I do not subscribe to the one drop rule..Why should she be forced to deny the one who raised her and loved her?..clearly there is age difference between us Sava..I do not care or know much about Ciara..I just remember reading that she described herself as being German..last I checked, that does not mean black...unless I am wrong Sava..I am sure YOU will let me know..

This is from Wiki..(which I know is not 100% accuracy necessarily..but here it is...

Biography

Early life
Ciara was born in Austin, Texas. She is the only child of Carlton and Jackie Harris. Ciara has Native American, Creole, German, and Irish ethnicity.[
..........................

Funny, I don't see Black..some Creoles deny vehemently the black blood..I don't know (or care) if she is one of them.
Rihanna, as I said before is a bw, but to expand, she is not a traditional black woman..she is probably a "lighter" color than Halle B..but yet has more genetically black blood..but as I asserted earlier..no one's heritage need be denied..but let us not pretend that someone like Ciara will probably use "blackness" as a financial convenience.(Once again, I am not wholly familiar with her or her no doubt many talents)

ex:

1-Govt. giving out a million dollars to all blacks..."she's black"..

2-Govt. making a return to slavery for all blacks..."she's not black"..a kind of Rosario Dawson blackness..anyway..(btw..I'd probably try to cop out there too.."Oh no Siree, I'm not black" ...)these are my observations..you can disagree. I don't care. I just felt like I needed to expand on the topic..and I have, and it is excessive really..and I am
D O N E....

DO not for a moment think this is "the Color Wars" part 2,000,0000..that is not who I am. I accept all of my sisters..no matter the color..us BW come in a huge variety..but you are extolling as black, (Mariah) a woman who does not factor into this conversation in that way..sometimes I will see a woman from afar with real blond hair and blue eyes..but who is clearly a bw..do you really think I can exclude someone like that..no..It is complicated..but I would apply a basic test..Are both of the parents black?..then there is the answer..in a nutshell..I could go further..but I won't..the subject is beat..or just getting started.

Thanks Sara..for allowing me to expand on my thoughts. I am sure some will misinterpret as usual. That is a risk I am willing to take...as usual.

I'm OUT...
really.
seriously...lol

Please believe me, there is no way, I REPEAT, NO WAY, two black people can have a blonde-haired, blue-eyed child. Two mixed race people. Yes. One black, one mixed parent, remotely possible. But two black parents. It is a genetic impossibility. It is like two white people having a darkskinned black child. They can, in some very rare cases, have a black/black-looking offspring (due to some unknown black genes in BOTH their family tree), but the child would most likely look mixed or fair complexioned. Any blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman that tries to convince you that both her parents are black(and not passing for black, two different things) is a born liar!
------------------

And to add to the Mariah thing. Sava don't forget that when Mariah first came out and for subsequent years, her selling point was that she was a white girl that could sing. The moment she had the nervous breakdown and everything came crashing down, voila, she is on the cover of a magazine being called 'America's most misunderstood black woman'. I saw the mag in Britain. I was racking my brain for weeks trying to figure out who they were talking about, till, ofcourse, I found out from any African-american that worships white skin, that according to the 'one-drop-rule', ms Carey is black. Yeah freakin' right!

first of all lets make our point without the cursing. Second. I don't know what you are talking about. I certainly do not think black blood is bad! And studies have proven that most AA are mixed. Look it up under AA genetics. As for Mariah, what exactly is wrong with her stating she is black? I'm confused by your anger! You, yourself have alluded that people tend to deny their blackness, yet when they claim it, you also have an attitude. My point was that most AA are mixed and simply call themselves black. My family is entirely mixed with many other people yet we all simply say that we are black, and we are very proud to be black. I guess I just don't get your point at all. But I do know that you need to be more respectful other others opinions. You could simply say Sara I disagree with you... this attempt you seem to be making to beat people over the head with your opionion is not going to fly here. Just because someone does not agree with you does not make them wrong! Often it simply means they are coming from a different perspective. You became downright rude about the blue eyes convo, and now I can almost see your temperature going up over this convo. If you feel agitated that people do not ALWAYS share your opinions, perhaps you should stop reading what they say....

For some reason, white people who really don't know any better tend to say about any black woman who is lighter-skinned, "Oh, she's not REALLY black, she's more mulatto," even if BOTH of her parents are black, like Rihanna and I. It saddens me to see that we are now getting that from our own people too.

Stop this madness people! A black woman is a black woman, and when I go in for a job interview or a scholarship, I am just as black as you are! It wasn't my choice for the media to favor lighter-skinned black women - I think darker black women are beautiful too and should have equal time in the spotlight!

Rihanna's father is mixed. Personally, I've always seen Rihanna as black, and the only people I've ever come across that don't are african-americans. If both your parents are black, then it baffles me as to why you'd think my comments meant that you are not black.

See, herein lies the problem. You assume that anyone who has such opinions is just 'jealous' of lighter-skinned blacks. Afterall, in one instance, you say you are 'just as black' when you go in for a job interview, yet admit that the media favours lighter skin over darker skin. Then why is it so hard for you to believe that the same would apply in a job interviw situation. I did not see anyone on this board mention that darker skinned women are less beautiful than lighter skinned ones, so I don't know why that is where your mind went. I think that says alot about how you really think. If I want to believe that people who are both black and white, black/asian etc, are just that, as opposed to just being black, which they are not, I am more than entitled to believe it. If someone is biracial, they are biracial. Moreover, if someone is only 1/4 black, they are just that. Calling them black doesn't change what they actually are.

So miss anonymous poster, there is a big difference between a light skinned black and someone who is only part black. It's obvious to me that in your head, you are convinced that my opinions stem from some assumption on your part that I don't like light-skinned black people(women), or I'm jealous of them, seeing as that is the only point you addressed in your post. As I have mentioned, my own dad's father was white, so you can try to guess how I look. It doesn't mean I shouldn't point out the truth. You don't have to be a dark-skinned black woman before you see something wrong with biracial women being the only ones representing black women in the media when there are more black women than biracial women around. And please let's not kid ourselves, your average biracial female is more than happy with the status quo. It's only become a problem(for most of them) lately because it's white women who are now being used to represent black biracial women.

And you said we should 'stop the madness'. YOU stop the madness. If you are light skinned, you are just as black as the next black person you meet. If one of your parents is non-black, you can call yourself black or not, nothing to do with me. If however, as in Mariah's case, you have one parent who is half-black and another who is non-black, how in the stars under heaven am I supposed to say that you are a representation of black women. Sara, I don't care if your family is mixed from here to sundown, the fact that they are your relatives doesn't make them black!

I agree that Mariah Carey isn't black, but someone on here was saying women like Rihanna and Ciara aren't traditional black women. Come ON! That is just nonsense.
